Centennial BOCES Migrant Secondary Youth Initiative
Purpose:
Research shows that migrant students have a very high drop out rate. Furthermore, those who do graduate face additional challenges and barriers to post-secondary options and careers. Documented studies have shown there are numerous barriers that impede the academic achievement of migrant high school students such as poverty, mobility, limited English language skills and culture conflicts between immigrant families and school environments. Programs that provide advocacy, case management, social support and training for both families and school staff have shown promising results at improving high school retention and graduation rates for migrant students.
